Week 9 Sees Peterborough run their win streak to 3

by Paul St. John

Week 9 of the Arena Lacrosse League is in the books and the Timbermen stay hot, the RiverWolves win a battle of specialty teams and in what was billed as the battle for first, the Six Nations Snipers completely outclassed and embarrassed the Oshawa Outlaws.

The first game of the day saw Peterborough continue to upwards climb towards a playoff spot, beating the St. Catharines ShockWave 14-10 for their 3rd consecutive victory after starting the season 0 and 6. The Timbermen rod...e the solid goaltending of Ryan Masters as well as a balance offensive attack complemented by some timely transition goals to put themselves one game behind both the ShockWave (4 and 6) and the Toronto Monarchs (4 and 5) in the battle for 4th and final playoff spot.

Both the Snipers and Outlaws were reeling from losses last weekend as they headed into what should have been the marque match-up of the day with the aforementioned first place to the winner. The Outlaws came with a depleted line-up and were flat from their first warm-up, the Snipers on the other hand were well prepared and chomping at the match-up from the get go totally dominating from start to finish becoming the first ALL team to put up 20 goals in a game against what was the league's stingiest defense. Zach Higgins did what he could to keep Oshawa close in the first half (6-2 Snipers) but that did nothing to inspire the Outlaws as the Snipers scored on their first two possessions of the third to run away with this one. Five different Snipers had hat tricks and Warren Hill was good when needed.

In the nightcap in Paris, Mike Burke returned to the RiverWolves lineup to lead Paris to big 17-13 win over the Toronto Monarchs moving the RiverWolves into a second place tie with Oshawa. We will have to wait for Wray Maracle's video review of this game but by our count the RiverWolves seemed to score 8 or more pp goals as both teams man up was working on this night. The Monarchs countered with a bunch of pp goals of their own but in the end could not hold on to a 13-11 early 4 quarter lead.

 Standings after week 9:
Six Nations Snipers 6 and 3
 Oshawa Outlaws 5 and 3
 Paris RiverWolves 5 and 4
 Toronto Monarchs 4 and 5
St. Catharines ShockWave 4 and 6
 Peterborough Timbermen 3 and 6

March 11th games see the league hottest team (Timbermen) travel to Six Nations to face the first place Snipers, game time is 4pm.

Oshawa will try to get back to their early season success and put an end to their mini slide as they travel to the TRAC in Oakville to face the hot and cold Monarchs of Toronto. This game gets going at 2pm.

In the nightcap, the St. Catharines ShockWave look to end a two game slide of the own as they play a rare home game in Paris against the RiverWolves. Game time is 8pm.
