TIMBERMEN FALTER FOR FIRST TIME THIS SEASON

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OSHAWA – The Peterborough Timbermen suffered their first loss of the 2019 season on Saturday, falling 16-10 to the St. Catharines ShockWave at Children’s Arena in Oshawa.

The Timbermen looked to be in control of the first-place battle, leading 8-5 at halftime and tied 9-9 after the third. It was a devastating fourth quarter that was the difference.

“We caused our own demise,” head coach Joe Sullivan said. “We had a great three quarters then watched our work ethic fall off and had players try to be individuals as opposed to a team. Undisciplined penalties in the fourth quarter diminished what little momentum we could muster. St. Catharines played like the first place team they are and deserved to win.”

The teams were even through the first quarter at three goals apiece. The Timbermen pulled away in the second with a four-goal run. Nick Damude allowed only five goals on 32 shots in 30 minutes of work.

Peterborough’s troubles were both offensive and defensive in the second half; they scored only two goals to St. Catharines’ 11. Brett Perras replaced Nick Damude in the third as Sullivan continues to give his goaltenders equal playing time.

Had the Timbermen won, they would have leap-frogged the Shock Wave for first place in the Arena Lacrosse League for the first time in their history. Instead, they are tied for second place with the Toronto Monarchs and will look to get back in the win column next weekend against the 0-5 Whitby Steelhawks.

Notes:

-          Last week’s game versus the Paris River Wolves, cancelled due to weather, will be rescheduled for later in the season.

-          Friday, the Timbermen made some room on their crowded roster by moving Cam Garlin to the Oshawa Outlaws for a ninth-round draft pick.

Scoring for the Timbermen:

Aaron Woods (2-1)

Mark Vradenburg (2-1)

Colton Armstrong (2-0)

Ty Thompson (1-3)

Blake Kenny (1-1)

Cameron Simpson (1-1)
