The ALL to Introduce 30 Second - 20 Second Reset Shot Clock

by Lance Winn

The Arena Lacrosse League and their innovative President Paul St. John announced today that the ALL will implement 30 Second Shot Clocks with a 20 Second Reset Option for the upcoming 2024-25 ALL season. All repossessions on rebounds along with balls that leave play off an opposition player or goalie will see a 20 second reset instead of the current 30 second reset. A 20 second reset will also happen off balls out of play off the goal post or crossbar.

"This has been on my mind for a few years" understated St. John "We actually tried this in a pre-season tourney prior to the 2022 season but our Vice President Lance Winn and I were in Langley, assisting with the launch of the ALL West, so we didn't get the opportunity to see it in action. At the time we only had the 1 set of shot clocks with the new function ability so we decided to shelf the idea until now".

"Truthfully, as many lacrosse people know, I enjoy finding ways that improve the game of lacrosse, we know this new shot clock format will speed up the offense and reward defenders who sacrifice themselves defensively by soaking up an opposition shot that heads out of bounds. It will also push coaches to strategize a little different in the last couple of minutes of a game".

All changes of possession will remain a 30 second reset, as will the start of possession after a penalty or face-off. St. John adds "These new rule changes come with the trust of our General Managers that the changes are beneficial to the game and its future and of course the ALL, I am thankful that we have such a great group."

We will get our first look at the new shot clock format in play during the start of the ALL West regular season in November as well as the East Pre-Season exhibition tournaments November 30 and December 1. The ALL East regular season opens Friday December 6.
