The Whitby Steelhawks traveled to the historic Brampton Memorial Arena on Friday night to meet the defending Arena Lacrosse League (ALL) champion, Brampton Express. Their prior meeting on December 20, 2025 resulted in a 14-13 overtime win for the Express. When the buzzer sounded on Friday the Steelhawks earned their fifth straight win after a tight 8-6 affair. In those five wins, after a 1-3 start to the season, they have managed to score an average of 13.6 goals per game and possess a stingy 8.6 goals per game against record.
“I love the results; I love the streak but more importantly I am happy with how we are playing to get these wins. We are playing a tenacious game by getting off the floor hard, double teaming when we have to and showing a solid work ethic. I like how we are doing the little things right,” said coach, Ryan Degerdon.
Friday’s game featured Ethan Harwood in net for the visitors and Laine Hruska took his spot in the Express cage. The netminders were named first and second stars of the game, first star Harwood allowed six goals on 51 shots while Hruska allowed eight goals on 43 shots.
The Steelhawks took a 5-3 lead into half-time and the score stayed that way until the fourth quarter as the teams went scoreless for the entire 15 minutes of the third quarter.
“Brad and I tell the guys that winning each quarter is the key and that we start fresh when we take the floor for the next 15 minutes. We also tell the guys that we expect to hear chatter on the bench and on the floor. We are happy to hear them talk to each other when they come off because, while our voices are important, it’s more important to hear them challenge each other to get better,” added Degerdon.
The low scoring game saw Devin Pipher score three times for the Steelhawks, younger brother Parker chipped in with a pair and singles went to Curtis Conley, Jonah Kerr, and Quinn Hyland.
The Steelhawks will take their 6-3 record home to Children’s Arena on Saturday February 14 for a 1 pm game against the Oshawa Outlaws. That is the only game on the ALL card that afternoon as the Oshawa FireWolves are home to the San Diego Seals at the Tribute Communities Centre at 7 pm in National Lacrosse League action.
